Making cars in the Play Pod

08 September 2016 Written by

This afternoon Year 4 Swift has been practising their team building skills in the Play Pod.

The Play Pod is a fantastic resource we have here at Hannah More that the children can use during their lunch time to build things and be creative with. The children worked as a team to make cars out of the amazing materials and resources that we have in our fantastic Play Pod in the playground which the children can use during lunchtimes.

Their task was to work together as a team to build a car. They were told that the winning team would be the one that showed the best team work skills. They began by huddling in their teams (as the photos show) to discuss their plan and what resources they might want to use from the Play Pod before they began to build.

Both teams worked collaboratively and shared ideas, respecting what each other brought to the team and the building process. They both came up with very unique cars, all with enough seats for each member of the team and were very excited to get in and take it for a spin. It was great to see that both cars came with seatbelts fitted into every seat!

Take a look at the photos to see what amazing creations they came up with!

Swift class Local History

12 June 2016 Written by

Our challenge during local history week was...

Who was this man and how did he have such an influence on thousands of people's lives?

220px George Muller

We asked the two visitors historically valid questions to find out more! In addition, we used a range of sources to infer information from. Such as: images, photos, artefacts and biographies. When handling the artfeacts we asked questions about what there were, their uses and who would use them.

Furthermore, we used these sources to rewrite our own biographies in the role of an Orphan. We even dressed up in the clothes that they would wear! We used drama to show how the Orphans might feel, we used our empathy and imagining skills.

For example: 'How many children went to the Orphanage?' 'Who worked there?' 'What did the Orphans do when they left the Orphanage?'

Final Philosophy Lesson in Swift

13 May 2016 Written by

Sadly, Swift class have come to the end of their Philosophy lessons with Alfie! We have enjoyed it and will continue to use the skills we have learnt!

We have found Philosophy useful because:

- It helps us with asking specific questions

- We have learnt how to give evidence

- We have learnt how to agree and disagree agreeably

- We have learnt how to have a debate

- We understand it is ok to have a different opinion

- We can give more than 1 reason as evidence

- We have shown empathy to others

- We have improved our listening

Philosophy - What is it?

22 February 2016 Written by

Philosophy!

Excitingly, Swift class have had their first Philosophy lesson with Alfie from Bristol University. We will be having Philosophy lessons every Wednesday afternoons.

Well what is Philosophy? So that we could begin to understand what Philosophy is, we asked Alfie some questions. Next, he gave us a set of questions; in groups we collaborated to sort them into piles. Questions which we thought were not Philosophical (they had an answer) and questions which we thought were Philosophical.

After a lot of discussion and debating, these were some examples we agreed were Philosophical:

If a tree fell down in a forest and made a sound, would there be a sound if no one was there to hear it?

Do we dream only in our sleep?

Why can’t a stick be a sword?
