Mrs Winterbourne's Group:

A very BIG hello to my lovely maths group – I’m missing you lots.

I hope you are all working hard and keeping safe.  I thought I would put together some maths for you to do so that you can keep up the excellent progress you were making at school. I’ll start with a bit of revision.  Let me know how you get on.

Remember to do a section in your times tables books every day – you should be getting really good at these by now!

Thursday 7th May 2020

Task 1: Watch the video by Beth Calverley and answer the following questions about it.

  1. In your opinion, what’s interesting and unique about the way that Beth wrote this poem?
  2. Do you agree/disagree with what the other children in Year 6 at Hannah More said about what they wish for Bristol? Explain why.
  3. What is different about the way a typewriter works compared to your computer/laptop/tablet? Use Google to research what typewriters do if you’re not sure.

Questions about the poem

  1. Were there any words in Beth’s poem that you didn’t understand? E.g. amidst. Research what they mean and write below.
  2. Beth’s poem only rhymes some of the time. Can you identify 4 different rhyming pairs she uses?I have included one example, can you think of 4 of your own?
    Day and way
  3. “And green is bright against the grey”
What do you think Beth is talking about when she writes this?
  4. “Everyone’s door is a special shade, our characters layered in the paint”
What do you think Beth means when she says that our characters are layered in the paint (of the door colour)?

Task 2: Your turn!

Have a go at writing your own poem about Bristol! Remember, it doesn’t have to rhyme if you don’t want it to – not all poems rhyme!

This week's creative task is magazine art! Click here to check it out! You don't even need a magazine - you could use anything you have lying around, such as old newspapers, newsletters, letters or even old books (check with your mum and dad first though!).

Weekly phone call

Mr Cook and Miss Skinner will be ringing round each child in Year 6 every Thursday morning between 9am and 12pm. Your families will receive a phonecall between these hours from an unknown phone number. Please try your best to answer it! We'll talk to children to see how you're getting on with the work as well as talking to parents to see how things are going and offer what help we can provide.
