In year 3 we set literacy, numeracy and spelling homework each week. The homework is designed to take about an hour to complete and is based on the learning that has taken place that week. Homework will be sent home on a Thursday and should be returned the following Monday. It is great if you can support your child with their homework and discuss their work with them. We find that this encourages them in their learning. If you would like more information on ways to support your child’s learning please feel free to ask. Children can also attend homework club on a Thursday where they will gain support with their work.

Also, don’t forget to read with your child daily. This will make a huge difference to their learning!

Each term you will also be set a homework challenge.

Your homework challenge this term is to use your knowledge of the rainforest to create a 3d model of this wonderful ecosystem. There are some wonderful ideas for this on the internet if you are stuck with what to do. Try to include a variety of plants and animals and perhaps even some tribal people.

I am looking forward to seeing your amazing models!

What a Disaster!

This term, we are going to look at natural disasters! We will be looking at where volcanos are located and where earthquakes are most likely to occur. We will look at the effect natural disasters can have and think of ways in which we can help. The homework challenge this term is to make a mini volcanoes to erupt. We will send home information on how to do this soon.

We are also going to become Scientists and will be planning and carrying out a fair test to find out if the surface of a ramp will affect the distance a car will travel. Further to this, we will be investigating magnetism, thinking about the size of the magnet and finding out which materials are the most magnestic.  Through studying the plants we will then think about how animal life is supported there and how animals have adapted to living in this habitat. Using all this knowledge, we will also think about what it would be like as a human being to live in this sort of environment.

At the end of the topic, we will be creating a report on natural disasters. Keep an eye out for this!

Each term, we try to organise a trip outside of school, or a specialist to visit our class to support the children learning in class.

On Monday 10th November, Woodpecker class went to watch 'The Lion King' at the cinema as part of Anti-bullying week. We had a lovely morning and have since linked the film to our lessons on anti-bullying.

Further to this, on Thursday 13th November we got a coach to Leighwoods as part of our Prehistoric Britain topic. We created a human timeline, visited an Iron Age fort, and made paint by foraging for leaves and crushing them together into a paste. Unfortunately, the trip was cut short due to the weather and the fact our shelter had blown away in the strong wind. Despite this, the children remained up beat, and loved walking around in the mud!

Term 3

This term, instead of an offsite visit, we had the Science Dome in school to teach us all about light and dark and the solar system. It was a fantastic experience and the children learned a lot, ready for the start of our new topic 'Let it Shine'.

Term 4

On the 11th March we visited Bristol Zoo as part of our Rainforest topic. We had time to visit all of the animals and play on the park, before taking part in a workshop on the Rainforest. Here we learned where the rainforests can be found and what it would be like to live there. We were able to hold beetle, feel a snake and get close to a stick insect. We considered the ways the animals were adapted and saw how well some animals are camoflagued. Further to this, we identified gorillas by their noses, guessed what products grew in the rainforest using our sense of smell, discussed why some animals are brightly coloured and found out that a mosquito is the most deadly animal in the rainforest. We all had a fantastic time and I was very proud of the class! Keep an eye out for pictures of our day!
