Welcome to Eagle Class!

My name is Miss Khaliq and I am the Eagle class teacher.  With some amazing adult support and 23 bright shining faces we make up the most amazng class in the whole of Hannah More!

Maria is our fantastic LSA who supports across the Year 6 classrooms in the morning and works with groups of children in the afternoons. We are also ably supported by Mollie who covers me on a Thursday afternoon and delivers the weekly PE lesson while I have a cup of tea and work with Mr Cook to plan the next week's learning.

If you ever need to speak to me about anything, big or small, please come find me on the playground (better for small things) or phone the office to make an appointment (better for the big things!).

Teaching

In year 6 we do maths, literacy and guided reading every morning. We also do arithmetic, spelling and grammar lessons through the week too.

In the afternoons we do handwriting, circle time, PSHE, French, PE and of course our all-exciting topic lessons!

Assessment

In May 2016, Year 6 children will be taking their SATs tests. The government has changed the SATs for 2016 onwards so this year's cohort will be the first to take the new style tests. We will hold meetings in the near future about changes to the tests and how you can help at home.

In every lesson we conduct a thorough assessment of the children's learning and ensure that work and targets are set according to each child's individual need. Through the year the school will arrange a series of parent's evenings (also known as Learning Review Meetings) where we will discuss your child's progress to date, what they need to do next and how you can help. If you're ever curious about how your child is getting on in the meantime, please feel free to get in touch and let me know.

Homework

Homework will be set every Thursday and should be handed back in every Monday. As the children are old enough to manage themselves now, we will expect all homework returned or children may have to find time during break or lunch to complete it. You will receive a text message on Monday afternoon if your child has not returned their homework.

They will be set maths, literacy, topic and either spelling or grammar homework each week. The homework may, at times, appear challenging but we strongly encourage parents to support their child's learning at home and to talk through difficult homework with children. As the children transition to secondary school, it is important that they become used to regularly completing challenging homework. If children need further help, then homework club runs after school every Thursday.

PE

Molly (our school's sport coach) will deliver PE every Thursday afternoon. It would be very helpful if children brought their PE kit with them every week to change into for this lesson.

We will also be swimming at Easton Leisure Centre every Thursday morning until Christmas. Children should come to school with swimming kit in a separate bag. We will leave school at 10.30am for our session at 11am, aiming to get back to school no later than 12.10pm. We always need parent volunteers to help us walk to the leisure centre so if you'd like to come and watch your child learning in the pool please let me know.

Book bags

Although they are now in Year 6, it is still vitally important that your child reads every day. They should read for at least 15 minutes in the evening and it will really help push on children's learning if they were asked questions about what they have just read.

Children can change books every day during our guided reading sessions. We have a new electronic lending system which should make lending easier and enable us to monitor who is and isn't regularly taking books. When you have heard your child read every day, please be sure to fill out the yellow reading logs in children's book bags.

If your child does not have a book bag, one can be purchased cheaply from the school office.

Transition to secondary

This is children's last year at Hannah More and parents should start thinking about secondary schools right away. Applications will be opening very soon and the deadline is 31 October. It is vital that applications are on time to ensure you stand the best chance of getting the school place you want for your child.

Please see the letter below for further information. If you need any help or advice, please see Ruth, Samira or Khalif in the community office.
