Year 3

07 September 2020

Welcome to Year 3!

Thank you for visiting our class page. We are really excited about the year ahead as there is lots to look forward to! Here you’ll find the key information about Woodpecker and Kingfisher classes.

Miss Ellison-Smith is the teacher in Woopecker class and Miss Mahmood is the teacher in Kingfisher. Stella will be working alongside both classes throughout the year. Mr Rosetti and Mr Relton will also be teaching the classes on a Thursday.

Year 3 is the first year of key stage two and here children face exciting learning that challenges them in different ways. Throughout the year children will develop their collaboration skills alongside their resilience so that they can face these challenges with a positive attitude. It is our hope that everyday children will be at school on time and ready to get stuck in to their learning.

Should you ever have any questions or queries you can find us in the playground most afternoons or you can contact the office to arrange a meeting (the number is on the website homepage).

Break and lunchtime

Breaktime is at 10.30-10.45. Children do not get a snack provided by the school anymore so children can bring a piece of fruit or vegetables in for their snack.

Lunchtime is at 12:45 - 1:45.

Writing and reading

We cover a wide variety of book writing types, both fiction and non-fiction, and each genre has an exciting book as a stimulus. Both classes will be inspired by carefully picked stories which include Arthur and the Golden Rope, Leon and the Place Between, James and the Giant Peach, Rama and Sita, Oliver and the Seawigs and Krindlekrax. At home you can support children by encouraging them to discuss what they are reading in class, reminding them to use full stops and capital letters every time they write and encouraging them to write for enjoyment.

Our reading lessons are now closely linked to our writing lessons and we will look deeply into each text throughout the year. We will also explore books that completely contrast with our focus texts, so that the children are exposed to a wide variety of books.

Please read with your child every day.

Enquiry

This year our topic learning will be done through enquiries. Each enquiry will be a question that the children gradually answer over a period of time. Each enquiry will finish with a challenge and the children will work towards achieving that challenge throughout their learning. Our enquiries this year will be:

Where does my shadow come from?

What is underneath our feet?

How can we find out about the past?

What did John Cabot do for travel?

What is magnetism?

What goes on behind the scenes?

How do plants die?

P.E.

Mr Rosetti will be teaching P.E. to Year 3 on a Thursday. Children should bring their P.E. kit to school and leave it on their peg for the term.  P.E. kit is navy or black shorts or jogging bottoms, a house colour t-shirt and trainers.

P.E. is a really important lesson for the children because as well as teaching them how to play different games and sports, it teaches them teamwork, collaboration and encourages them to live a healthy lifestyle. Please encourage your child to be active and eat healthily.

Homework

Homework is given out on a Thursday and should be returned on a Monday. Please encourage and support your child with their homework because it is important that they practise the skills they are learning in class at home as well.

If you would like to do extra practise with your child, you can visit the following websites. All children should have their log in details, but if you are not sure about these, please get in touch.
